As is true with just about everybody on the planet, 2020 did not go according to script for Bullington Gardens. This was supposed to be a year when we celebrated our 30th anniversary with a big gala, among our other usual activities. But, that celebration was postponed. Our spring, fall and holiday plant sales had to be moved online due to health concerns. Most of our adult programs were cancelled, with a few moving to Zoom. School programs were certainly curtailed, but we have tried to keep the high school programs going either online or by visiting the schools for outdoor programs. And our happy volunteer sessions were scaled way back with only a fraction of our volunteer force coming to help.
So while we wrestled with those challenges all year, there were many bright spots in 2020. Our customers very kindly adapted to the online sales, and for the most part we have kept up with previous years’ sales. Our program participants were patient as we fumbled along on Zoom. We saw a record number of visitors to the gardens. One key factor was the sudden popularity of the Fairy Trail and Garden. People of all ages came to see this attraction with patience and kindness. Our volunteers stepped up to make the experience safe for everybody and it seemed to be very much appreciated. The Dahlia Garden also was a bright spot and many came to see this annual display of vibrant color with excitement.
What is especially gratifying is that our community has supported Bullington through this difficult year and we can look forward to 2021 with a sense of optimism. The end of this year turned out much better than it appeared midway. We appreciate all those who bought plants, made donations, offered encouragement and supported Bullington Gardens in many ways.
