Collapse ▲Well, school is back in session and fall classes have started at Bullington Gardens. A new face you will see this fall when you visit Bullington is Rosemary Reeves – Rosie for short. Rosie began her tenure at Bullington in July and has had time to get her feet on the ground and start plying her many talents at the garden.
Rosie has been a great addition to the Bullington staff and is fitting in very well and proving to be a great resource for the staff, students, and clientele at the garden. Be sure to drop by and welcome Rosie when you get an opportunity. Her primary responsibilities include managing the BOOST and Horticultural Therapy programs. However, she has been instrumental in setting up several great educational programs for the public in her short time there.
Rosie graduated from UNC-Wilmington with a BS in Environmental Studies and a BA in Spanish. She received her Master’s of Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Appalachian State. Most recently, Rosie worked as a licensed mental health counselor in Boone where she worked with patients with depression, substance abuse, PTSD, and other disorders.
Rosie’s experience and education are a great match for her responsibilities at Bullington.
BOOST (Bullington Onsite Occupational Skills Training) is a program for sophomores in the Occupational Course of Study in all four Henderson County Public High Schools. BOOST cultivates pre-vocational skills such as time management, respectful communication, process planning, and collaboration as students work on the trails, gardens, and grounds.
Horticultural Therapy (HT) engages people in gardening and plant-based activities to promote well-being and rehabilitation. A growing body of research shows that HT provides many physical, mental, and emotional benefits. Bullington Gardens uses HT to improve the lives of both children and adults in our community.
Based in the therapy garden and greenhouse, this program offers plant-based activities to Henderson County Public Schools students with special needs as a means of skill development, rehabilitation and wellness. Students tend their own gardens, make nature crafts and enjoy the gardens and grounds on a weekly basis.
Rosie spent over two years as an environmental educator with the Peace Corps in Guatemala. Her experience there included teaching youth ages 8-18 as well as providing workshops for teachers. Additionally, she worked as an Environmental Education Program Assistant at Arlie Gardens in Wilmington where she taught classes and designed curriculum among other duties. She has many other relevant experiences in her background as well.
Rosie has been working with Extension’s Steve Pettis as well as the Horticulture Department at Blue Ridge Community College on some great programs which are being incorporated into Bullington’s many educational opportunities. She has been busy working on teaching lessons and has gotten the school year off to a great start for the students that come to Bullington. We know that she will continue the strong legacy of the great work and partnerships that Bullington has established over the years.
In addition to those duties, Rosie has pitched right in to help with many of the events at Bullington including the plant sales, fairy garden (currently closed for the season) as well as other events. She is a welcome addition to the great team at Bullington Gardens.
