May 18 is World Therapeutic Horticulture Day!

Mark your calendars, green thumbs and well-being enthusiasts! Sunday, May 18, 2025, is World Therapeutic Horticulture Day, and Trellis, the leading voice for therapeutic horticulture in Scotland, is inviting everyone, everywhere, to celebrate the incredible power of plants to heal and nurture.

Here in North Carolina, and across the globe, the connection between people and plants is being increasingly recognized for its profound impact on our physical, mental, and social well-being. Trellis of Scotland has long championed this connection, supporting a network of projects that bring the benefits of gardening to individuals facing a wide range of challenges. This organization pioneered World Therapeutic Horticulture Day in 2023 as a chance to shine a spotlight on this vital work and encourage everyone to experience the joy and therapeutic benefits of engaging with nature.

Why a World Therapeutic Horticulture Day?

For years, Trellis has been a driving force in promoting the understanding and practice of therapeutic horticulture. This dedicated day provides a global platform to:

  • Raise Awareness: Help more people understand the evidence-based benefits of working with plants for therapy, rehabilitation, and well-being.
  • Celebrate Achievements: Recognize the incredible work of therapeutic horticulture practitioners, volunteers, and the positive impact on individuals and communities worldwide.
  • Inspire Participation: Encourage individuals, organizations, and communities to explore and engage with therapeutic horticulture activities.
  • Connect the Global Community: Foster a sense of shared passion and knowledge exchange among those involved in the field internationally.

How Can You Celebrate World Therapeutic Horticulture Day?

No matter your location or gardening experience, there are countless ways to participate and celebrate the people-plant connection:

  • Get Your Hands Dirty: Spend some time gardening! Plant a seed, tend to your houseplants, weed your garden, or simply enjoy being amongst greenery. Notice how it makes you feel.
  • Visit a Local Garden: Explore a botanical garden, community garden, or even a local park. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of nature.
  • Bring Nature Indoors: Cut some flowers, arrange a small bouquet, or simply appreciate the plants you have in your home or workspace.
  • Share the Joy: Talk to friends and family about the benefits you experience from being around plants. Share photos of your gardening activities on social media using the hashtags #WorldTherapeuticHorticultureDay#WTHD and #gardeningforhealth
  • Support a Local Project: Look for therapeutic horticulture programs or community gardens in your area and consider volunteering or donating.
  • Learn More: Explore the NC State Therapeutic Horticulture website to update your knowledge of the practice.
  • Start Small: Even a tiny interaction with nature can be therapeutic. Take a mindful moment to appreciate a single flower or the feel of soil in your hands.
  • Organize a Mini-Event: If you’re part of a community group or organization, consider hosting a simple plant-related activity on May 18.
