NC State & AG*IDEA Courses That Meet AHTA Requirements

Courses that meet the American Horticulture Therapy Association’s academic requirements.

A total of twelve (12) semester credits are required. Three core required courses and a minimum of three (3) semester credits in one individual subject area.

These courses can be taken through NC State University as a non-degree studies student (NDS) or through AG*IDEA. AG*IDEA is a consortium of universities that share online course content. See this page for how to get enrolled in an AG*IDEA course. NC State Course Descriptions.

Core Requirements:

Introduction to horticulture
- NC State course: HS 201, World of Horticulture
  - Offered online in the Fall and 10-week Summer semester
  - Offered face to face in the Fall and Spring semesters
Plant propagation
- NC State course: HS 203, Home Plant Propagation
  - Offered online in the Spring semesters
Pest and disease plant management
- NC State course: ENT 212, Basic Entomology
  - Offered online in the Spring
- AG*IDEA Course: Introduction to Entomology
  - Offered online in the Spring and Fall semesters
- Possibly AG*IDEA Course: Management of Horticulture Insects
  - Offered online in the Spring semester
- Possibly AG*IDEA Course: Entomology and Pest Management
  - Offered online in the Summer semester
- Possibly AG*IDEA Course: Biological Control of Pests
  - Offered online in the Spring semester

Individual subject area -

a minimum of three (3) semester credits:

General plant pathology
- NC State course: HS 315, Principles of Plant Pathology
  - Offered face to face in the Fall semester
- AG*IDEA Course: Plant Pathology
  - Offered online in the Spring semester
Greenhouse production/management
- AG*IDEA Course: Advanced Greenhouse Crop Production
  - Offered online in the Spring semesters
Nursery production/management
- NC State course: HS 550 Environmental Nursery Production
  - This is a graduate-level course. An undergraduate, plant science-related degree is required to take this class
  - Offered in the Fall semester of odd years.
Landscape design
- NC State Course: HS 250, Home Landscape Design
  - Offered online in the Summer II semester
Floral Design
- NC State courses,
  - 2022 HS 495-007 (2 hr credit), 8 weeks 10/14-11/2, Fridays 1:30-4:15)
  - 2023 HS 275-001 (3 hr credit) Fall Semester, Fridays 1:30-4:15)
Plant materials
- NC State Course: HS 202, Home Plant Identification
  - Offered online in the Fall semester
- AG*IDEA Course: Herbaceous Plants
  - Offered online in the Fall semester
Soils
- NC State Course: HS 200, Soil Science
  - Offered online in the Fall and Spring semesters
