This is the second course in a four-course series of online, self-paced Therapeutic Horticulture courses, beginning February 16, 2026.

Complete all four online courses to earn a Certificate of Mastery in Therapeutic Horticulture from NC State and the NC Botanical Garden!

NC State University Department of Horticultural Science and the North Carolina Botanical Garden at UNC Chapel Hill have partnered to create an exciting online learning program! Therapeutic Horticulture 2: Program Development is the second in a series of online courses that teach the theory, practice, and profession of Therapeutic Horticulture. Important: students must have completed TH1: Introduction to Therapeutic Horticulture to enter TH2: Program Development.

This course will equip students with the skills to design therapeutic horticulture treatment interventions for a wide variety of sites and participant populations. Students will learn to perform essential participant and site assessments that inform the next steps of a therapeutic horticulture program’s development and management. We will explore using client-centered assessment data to let the program ‘write itself.’ Students will practice developing overarching program and client treatment goals that target specific outcomes. Also, we will cover important safety information vital to creating programs that avoid participant injury and promote therapeutic growth. Using dynamic interactive forums with real-world examples, students will research, discuss, and reflect on the multiple facets of TH program development and will be provided with references and resources for further study.
