Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers and guests gather to learn about Therapeutic Horticulture

Therapeutic Horticulture is a dynamic, fascinating, growing field of practice with lots to learn, and different groups all over North Carolina, the United States, and the world are eager to host learning events to introduce this practice to their communities! How can you arrange for a speaker in your community?

NC State Therapeutic Horticulture outreach is available as a resource for all North Carolina Extension agents as well as on-campus groups. Amy Bruzzichesi, the program manager, can work with the agent to understand learning needs and create a unique, evidence-based presentation in person or via Zoom to introduce TH to the group, discuss safety, program planning, activities, or other aspects of the practice that will benefit the community in planning or continuing an existing TH program. These groups are often Extension Master Gardener volunteers, who can enjoy the training while they also gain annual education hours.

Outreach events must be arranged several months in advance to allow for scheduling and program research. While there is no fee, counties are asked to cover the expense of mileage to and from campus for onsite visits, as well as providing materials for any planned hands-on activities.

For groups and needs that are not Extension-based, you have the option of partnering with your local Extension agent to co-host a learning event! The Graham Public Library, the Clara McLean House and Garden, and other local groups have partnered with their county Extensions to host presentations. Because of time and other constraints, non-Extension events are not possible for outreach, but we can sometimes assist with locating other therapeutic horticulture practitioners in your area who may be interested in working with your group.

The interest in therapeutic horticulture is exciting– be sure to follow the NC State Therapeutic Horticulture Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn to see where we are going next!
